Planting Time

Finally got the seeds planted in the vegetable garden last week. Trying a few new things this year...soybeans and snap peas. Plus Mark planted garlic and eggplant which are new.
I already have a few green sprouts starting to emerge.

It is always a fun adventure in the 'ole garden as I am sure it will be again this year.

Spring in the Yard

Spring is here...well it made a grand entry and has backed off a bit. But the plants have arrived and are hopefully not going to be hurt by the last snap of cold. Here is some of what is blooming around so far.

Gardening Still

The heat has been a little rough on the yard this summer but mostly my yard and not our vegetable patch. Things are still blooming and we have had our spurts of a lot of veggies.

It looks a bit of a mess but in its messiness is some goodness. We still have tomatoes, cucumbers and potatoes to eat. I am still holding out hope for the squash, but I think our green beans are finished. We grew carrots and they are really cute from the top but never really made anything edible. Here are a few more shots.

I looked here for seeds for cool weather lettuce and such, but hadn't been able to find any. But when I was in the big Winston-Salem, lo and behold, they have seeds. Not just regular ole packets of seeds; you can buy them by the 1/2 ounce and they come in these cute packs...felt very old fashioned. But bonus was the vegetable planing guide they also gave me. So soon (according to my chart from Aug 15-Sept 15) I will plant my spinach and lettuce and hope for an extension to the veggies.

Planting Day

Today Leah and I planted our veggie seeds. Well, most of the veggie seeds. Potatoes were planted a few weeks ago and are already green sprouts.

This is pre any work this morning. In the middle is some spinach that got planted awhile back. I had it for lunch today...very delicious! And the potatoes are shooting up...still have a ways to go before we can eat them, but great progress none the less.

Post planting...I know it looks sooo different. We added a little of the good stuff to the soil (peat moss, manure, soil for veggies), stirred it up and planted away.
What did we plant?

Last year everything was too close together and some things, like carrots and squash, never had a chance at sunlight. So this year we spaced better (we think) and did less of everything. Potatoes, 2 different kinds of green beans, squash, cucs, snow peas, and lima beans. I'll plant some tomatoes too in a few weeks. And our blueberry bush is back and green, so we will see if this year it makes any blueberries.

Funny how these fellas will turn into green yummy things in a few months time. So excited!

Spring is Coming!

I finally did some much needed weeding and getting the yard cleaned up for the start of spring. I found these lovely flowers out front and the start of other things blooming.

Can't wait to plant our veggie garden and spend more time out in the yard, using my hands, watching things grow. And I am ready for a lot more days that look like this. (But with green leaves on the tree)

Holy Green Bean

So, last spring Leah and I built an above ground garden and planted some veggies. Some veggies did awesome, others never turned into a green sprout. It was a fun process and I am excited for next spring. I have been neglecting it because there is really just an old watermelon vine, the tomato bush, and some green bean plants we threw in the ground at the end of the season. Yesterday, in procrastinating for my tests I decided I must rake (my dad would be proud). So in the process I went to the garden and discovered ,this:

These green beans are way bigger than our first round of green beans in the spring. I don't know, I just love watching things grow...something about nature where I am amazed by how things work. I am sure there is a way to relate this to life, but right now I am just excited about eating green beans for dinner. Maybe we will plant some lettuce before it gets too cold.
